Biography

 Graduated in Chemical Engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan. He began his University career near the Institute of Sanitary Engineering of the same Polytechnic under the guide of Professor Eugenio De Fraia Frangipane.

Appointed University Professor in charge to University of Pavia in 1976, he became Full Professor of the same Athenaeum in 1980.
He worked in this Athenaeum until 2002, when he moved to University of Insubria -Varese in order to found the Department of Engineering.

He promoted the activation of the Course of Degree in "Engineering for Safety & Environment" and he promotes the institution of a new Department, DASS (Dipartimento "Ambiente-Salute-Sicurezza").

For several years, he collaborates with the High Council for Public Works of the Italian Government and with a lot of international organisms, among which the W.H.O.

He has acted for many years as President of ANDIS - National Association of Sanitary-Environmental Engineering, by promoting important international relationships.

He has issued 179 scientific papers, many of international value, the majority concerning the fields of water treatment and solid wastes treatment and disposal.

  • Coordinator of Master GIASSI ("Integrated Management of Environment, Health and Safety in Industry").
 

Research interests

The main interests of research are in the fields of waters treatment (especially wastewaters) and municipal and industrial solid wastes treatment & disposal. The research is essentially applied to the study of innovative technologies.

It needs to underline, in particular, the following interests of research recently and currently promoted:

Treatment of Wastewaters:
- processes of lagooning and phytodepuration to the service of small communities;
- advanced technologies with use of microporous systems in activated sludge processes;
- advanced techniques for checking the efficiency of activated sludge processes;
- implementation of wastewaters denitrification techniques;
- control of the environmental impact caused by aerosol and odour;
- chemical-physical processes for wastewaters treatment.

Municipal Solid Wastes:
- composting of selected organic fractions from municipal solid wastes and compost re-use;
- advanced technologies for stack gas treatment coming from municipal solid wastes incineration plants;
- biomasses conversion into energy;
- environmental impact of municipal solid wastes treatment and disposal systems.

Other Interests of Research:
- production and use of Biodiesel;
- hydrogen recovery from biomasses;
- biochemical processes for hydrogen production from water.
