Biography

From 1974 to present I have been a researcher and scientific coordinator for several projects and programs in the field of wildlife ecology and conservation (field research, wildlife conservation strategies, wildlife and game management plans, restocking programs, technical training). From 1981 to present I have been the Scientific Director of Valle Belviso Barbellino Game Reserve (Lombardy Region, Orobie Park).

I have work experience in the field of wildlife biology and management in many countries in Europe, Africa and America: Italy, Switzerland, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Somalia, Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Canada and Alaska.

During my career I have acted as coordinator and/or scientific expert for several international research projects promoted and/or supported by the following organizations: European Commission Directorate General VIII – Development; Italian Ministry of University and Scientific and Technical Research (MURST)/University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania); United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/WWF US and Tanzania Program Office; CESVI NGO (Italy)/Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Istituto Oikos NGO, Italy and Tanzania; TerraNuova NGO (Kenya)/European Commission – EuropeAid.

I have written 116 scientific articles and papers and 96 technical reports.

Qualifications and awards

1968: Degree of higher secondary school at Scientific High School “G. Carducci”, Busto Arsizio, Italy.

1977: Degree in Biological Sciences, State University of Milan (Italy).

Research interests

My major interest is in the field of wildlife biology and ecology, with emphasis on wildlife management and conservation, in Italy as well as in African countries. Particular interest in the evolutionary biology of Bovidae in Europe and Africa. I also conducted training on natural resources conservation and management.

I have coordinated many projects for local authorities in Italy (regions, provinces, national and regional parks and nature reserves) on a wide variety of topics: Georeferenced Wildlife Archives, reintroductions of mountain ungulates, research and management projects of several game species (hares, ungulates, alpine tetraonids).

I participated at the BioItaly Project in the framework of the Natura 2000 European Commission Project. Further interest is in Habitat Suitability Assessment for terrestrial vertebrates and Environmental Impact Assessment related to the construction of the hydroelectric power plants.

I also developed a special interest in ecology, management and conservation of African wildlife, in particular large herbivores, in and around the National Parks of Tanzania, Kenya and Somalia. This work includes counts and radio-telemetry studies of large herbivores (elephant, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo), National Park General Management Plans, (Mount Meru Conservation project, Tarangire National Park Natural Resource Monitoring and Conservation Studies).

I am further involved in the training of African National Parks and Wildlife Divisions personnel, to improve their technical skills and natural resource management capability and to offer research opportunities to graduate students. This is linked to interest in socio-economic development of local populations, that live around park boundaries and are affected by frequent human-wildlife conflict, and their sustainable use of renewable natural resources.
