Research interests

The main research interests focus on:

A) Economic development: theories and strategies. In particular, research has focused on endogenous development model and on the opportunities to launch strategies of economic development which allow both the valorisation of local resources and the sustainability & durability. The research will pay attention to the coordination of economic policies and interventions at the different levels of the State, mainly including the mesoeconomc dimension, which is crucial in making effective strategies and successful development policies. A comparative research has been organised, in cooperation with other Universities, on the regional development in some industrialising countries (Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Morocco, Vietnam, Philippines, Romania), looking at the role of agglomeration economies and learning processes.

B) Innovation. Theory and strategies. Particular attention has been devoted to the local and regional innovative systems. The policy orientation of the research explains the interests in the opportunities of launching innovative strategies and coherent policies, especially in areas with small and medium sized firms.

C) Industrial districts: analysis of the transformation processes and of the role of collective actions and policy interventions. Particular attention has been devoted to the challenges of globalisation of production and to the risks of delocalisation and international decentralisation of production. Through an international network of research institutions, an international comparative analysis, both at the European level and the international one, will be carried out.

D) Local economic development: analysis of different patterns and construction of a typology of models of local development and organisation of production. Even in this case, an international comparison on the experiences and strategies of local development has been organised to foster the institutional learning and the diffusion of “best practices”. Also in this field of research the attention to the policy side is quite relevant, with particular emphasis on strategic planning.
