Biography

Ezio Vaccari was born in Verona in 1962. He graduated in Letters at the University of Florence in 1989 and obtained a Ph.D. in History of Science from the University of Bari in 1996. Between 1990 and 1998 he was awarded with several research fellowships in Germany (Universität Rostock and Bergakademie Freiberg), Ireland (Trinity College Dublin), Austria (Geologische Bundesanstalt Wien) and France (Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, Paris).

In 1996 he was appointed 'Resident Fellow' for one year at the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology (MIT, Cambridge, Mass., USA). From 1998 to 2001 he worked as researcher at the “Center of Study on the History of the Techniques” of the CNR (Italian National Research Council) in Genoa. In 2001 he was appointed Associate Professor in History of Science and Technology at the University of Insubria.

Since 2002 he has organized in Varese a series of conferences on the History of the Mountain and in 2004 he organized with Nicoletta Morello (University of Genoa) the international INHIGEO Fieldtrip “Italian Institutions and Geological Sites in the History of the Geosciences”. He is an Associate Editor of the international journal Earth Sciences History.

During the last fifteen years he has attended about 70 symposia, conferences and workshops in Europe and the USA, with papers presented in English, French and Italian. He has published 2 books, edited 2 conference proceedings and published 64 scientific papers.

Research interests

General research interests:

- history of Earth sciences and history of natural sciences with particular emphasis on the relationships between geology, mineralogy and mining from the 16th to 19th century.

- historical development of technical and scientific communication.

Specific research subjects:

- history of geological and naturalistic researches based on the study and the exploitation of alpine and prealpine regions, with particular emphasis on the reconstruction of the scientific itineraries in the field.

- analysis of the role of the institutions (universities, museums, academies, scientific societies etc.) in the development of the natural and geological sciences in Italy in the 18th and 19th centuries.

- the development of lithology and stratigraphy in 18th century Italy and Europe through the study of the 'classifications' of mountains, the ‘theories of the Earth” and the early geological fieldwork on a regional scale.

- the different ways of diffusion of geo-mineralogical theories and mining techniques between the 18th and 19th centuries, with particular attention to the teaching in the mining schools and academies, as well as to the role of periodicals, correspondences, collections, cartography, instructions for travellers and other forms of scientific communication.

- history of the Austrian-Italian relationships in the field of 19th century geology and Earth sciences, with particular emphasis on the making of the first geological maps of Northern Italy by the geologists of the Geologische Reichsanstalt of Vienna.

- recognition of the existence of valuable collections and archives for the history of science and technology in the territory of Insubria, in order to promote scientific studies and organize projects of revaluation with the support of multimedial tools as well as information and communication technologies.
