Born on April 14, 1945. After completing a humanities course of study in high school, in 1964 he entered the medical school of the University of Pavia as “alumnus” at the historical Borromeo College. He received his M.D. degree with full marks on July 1970 discussing the thesis: “Treatment of precocious puberty”.

In 1973, he obtained the specialty in Pediatrics discussing the thesis “ABO feto-maternal incompatibility”. In 1975-76 he spent one year at the Immunology Laboratory (director prof. Jöran Möller) of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, studying B cell activation.

Subsequently he obtained the specialty in Clinical and Laboratory Hematology (1978) with a thesis: ”In vitro activation of leukemic cells: minimal residual disease”, and Allergology and Immunology (1982) with the thesis: ”IgG subclasses antibody production in children after immunotherapy with Lolium perenne.”

Assistant at the Pediatric Dept. (Director, Prof. G.R. Burgio) of the University of Pavia, in 1986 he was appointed as Associate Professor in Pediatrics. Director of the clinical immunology laboratory at the same department since 1980.

In 1983 he was appointed Director of the Onco-Hematological ward for treating leukemia and congenital defects of immunity with the use of bone marrow transplantation. In 1996, he was appointed Full Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Insubria in Varese.

Fellowship from Anna Villa Rusconi Foundation in 1975-1976. Member of the Lombardia Region committee for the campaign against the SIDS since 1998.

Interested in sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in children (snoring, sleep obstructive apnea syndrome, upper airways resistance syndrome). He is studying the correlations between polysomnographic recordings and apnea severity, as well as the relationships between gastroesophageal reflux and apnea in infants.

He is investigating the influence of environmental pollution and SDB on asthma and wheezing bronchitis, infants referred for apparent life threatening events in an effort to identify etiologic factors and to assess the value of home monitoring. Melatonin, cortisol and inflammatory cytokine production during sleep have also been investigated. Contributions have been given to investigations of CCHS, Ondine syndrome, and autoimmune phenomena in children with 21 trisomy and/or Turner syndrome. Immune defects in children are also dealt with: neutropenia, autoinflammatory disorders, recurrent infections.
