Biography

Umberto Piarulli was born in Varese (Italy) in 1965. After his primary and secondary school in Varese, in 1990 he obtained his “Laurea in Chimica” (MSC in Chemistry) at the University of Milano. From 1991 to 1996 he was a doctoral student in the group of Prof. C. Floriani (University of Lausanne, Switzerland) and he received his Ph.D. in 1996. His PhD thesis dealt with the synthesis of transition metal complexes of carbohydrate derivatives as oxygen rich ligands and promoters of novel architectures in coordination chemistry.

In 1996 he became researcher of organic chemistry at Milan University in the group of professor C. Gennari. In 1996 (summer) he was visiting scientist at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724, USA). From 1998 to 2004 he was researcher of organic chemistry at the University of Insubria at Como. In 2002 he got his habilitation as Associate Professor of organic chemistry and in 2004 he was appointed Associate Professor of organic chemistry at the University of Insubria - Como. He is co-author of 46 research papers in refereed journals and 2 chapters in books.

Qualifications and awards

His awards include: “Young Talented Organic Chemist Lecture” at the 12th European Symposium on Organic Chemistry (ESOC 12) (Groningen – NL, 2001); INNOVATEC Guest Chair on Combinatorial Chemistry and Solid Phase Synthesis (Insitut für Organische Chemie, Universität Regensburg, 2003); member of the managing council of the interuniversity consortium “Reattività Chimica e Catalisi” (Chemical Reactivity and Catalysis).

Research interests

His research interests include: (i) the design and development of new enantioselective methods, and their application to the synthesis of natural and unnatural targets; (ii) the solid phase synthesis of combinatorial libraries of organic compounds with interesting biological and chemical properties; (iii) the synthesis of combinatorial libraries of chiral ligands for enantioselective catalysis.

More recently his research interests include also the synthesis of unnatural amino acids with defined conformational properties in the frame of an EC funded project in collaboration with the University of Paris-Sud 11 and Regensburg (coordinator of the “Marie Curie Host Fellowships for Early Stage Researchers Training” project “Foldamers” contract MEST-CT-2004-515068).
