Biography

July 1984 - February 1985: X-ray single-crystal studies on structural problems of transition metal complexes.

1985: Visiting Scientist position (14 months) at the IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, California, under supervision of Bill Parrish [development of instrumentation and methodologies for the measure and interpretation of X-ray powder diffraction patterns of inorganic samples with synchrotron radiation (SSRL, Stanford)].

1985 -1988: Research Doctorate Thesis: structural studies of transition metal carbonyl clusters containing up to six interstitial atoms (C, Ge and Sn) in the same metallic cage.

Spring 1987: 9 weeks at the Research Center KFA Juelich (Kernforschungsanlage), Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Georg Will, University of Bonn, and in cooperation with the Institute for Solid State Physics of KFA (neutron diffraction) [Modelling of inorganic structures from neutron and synchrotron radiation data].

November 1988: Visiting scientist (9 months) at the IBM Almaden Research Center, developing unconventional (non ambient) diffraction techniques for high-tech materials (organic polymers, HTC's and solid state proton conductors).

September 1989: structural studies and stereochemical correlations for mono and polynuclear complexes of Ir, Ni, Co, Cu, Re and Cd.

February 1990: Permanent Position (Researcher) at the faculty of Sciences of University of Milan, Dipartimento di Chimica Strutturale e Sterochimica Inorganica.

September 1991: Beginning of a project on ab-initio XRPD methods from conventional laboratory equipment applied to coordination and organometallic compounds.

March 1995: Organisation of the Workshop: 'The contribution of Powder Diffraction to Structural Chemistry: Ab-initio and Rietveld Techniques' in Gargnano sul Garda, BS, Italy; a 250 pages book (in English) has been published on the subject as Supplement 98 to the Journal 'Ricerca Scientifica ed Educazione Permanente' 1995, (University of Milano, Ed.).

November 1998: Permanent Position (Associate Professor) at the Faculty of Sciences of University of Insubria - Como (Italy).

December 2004: Permanent Position (Full Professor) in the School of Sciences in Como at the Universityof Insubria (Italy).

* Stereochemical characterization of metal-containing diazolato derivatives, with particular emphasis on groups 7-12 metals;

* Development of methodological aspects of powder diffraction methods and their application into the coordination and organometallic chemistry fields;

* Use of combined single-crystal X-rays and powder neutron diffraction techniques in the structural characterization of 3rd row transition metal hydrides;

* Structural studies of high-nuclearity platinum carbonyl clusters;

* Studies of poorly crystalline or amorphous inorganic and organometallic systems by total scattering methods;

* Functional hybrid materials for gas storage and sensing, NLO properties and molecular magnetism: structure-properties relations.
