Research Center for Thoracic Surgery

The Research Center for Thoracic Surgery was founded in September 2003. It is directed by Lorenzo Dominioni, Professor of Surgery at the Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Insubria in Varese. Members of the Scientific Committee of the Center are: Prof. C. Capella (Pathology), Prof. G. Carcano (Surgery) and Dr. A. Imperatori (Surgery).

The Center facilitates clinical and experimental research projects and organizes seminars and conferences on the following topics:

1. New technologies in thoracic surgery
2. Screening and early diagnosis of lung cancer in smokers and former smokers ("Progetto PRE.DI.CA." in Varese)
3. Epidemiology of lung cancer
4. Treatment of small lung nodules by video-thoracoscopy
5. Surgical treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (multimodal therapy)
6. Mediastinal tumors
7. Advances in video-thoracoscopy

The Center actively participates in the project "Genetic Epidemiology of Lung Cancer and Smoking" (GELCS) promoted by the National Cancer Institute, USA.
