Research interests

Use of molecular markers (RFLPs, RAPDs, SCARs and microsatellites) for the study of the structure of the genome in sorghum and maize and to localise useful genes (maize, mouse, man). The new molecular techniques were applied to answer basic questions in classical genetics and quantitative genetics: genetic maps were built for sorghum and maize and used to localise the genetic factors controlling quantitative traits. Some of the results obtained have been among the first obtained in the respective fields.

Quantitative genetics in different organisms: building of genetic maps and localisation of QTLs by means of molecular tools in maize, mouse, man;

Population genetics of forest trees: neutral genetic molecular markers were utilised to build the first published genetic map and to estimate the amount of genetic variability in Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.). The same tools have been used to conduct large-scale surveys about the distribution of the genetic variability among different Italian populations of the same species and in other species of interest for conservation (Juniperus phoenicea, Quercus robur, Quercus cerris).

Population genetics of different fish and molluscs (octopus, trout, pike) of commercial interest with regard to the aspects of conservation of genetic resources.

Molecular phylogenetics and evolution, with regard to the analysis of the evolution of the genomes of HBV and HCV in healthy and diseased individuals.
