The main area of activity is related to spinal and prosthetic surgery. Studies have also been carried out in basic research applied to avascular necrosis of the femoral head, chronic osteoarticular pain and the related NMDAR and TRPV channels, as well as elective and traumatic orthopaedic surgery involving various parts of the body.
This laboratory serves as the reference facility for research carried out by the Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Pathology and Surgery of the Locomotor System.

- Exakt cutting unit with diamond band saw for cutting hard tissue samples and prosthetic components. The cutting unit is equipped with a parallel-motion slide on which the sample is fixed to speed up the cutting process
- Exakt polymerisation unit for the polymerisation (hardening) of resins embedding hard tissue samples and sections of prosthetic components
- Exakt grinding unit for reducing the thickness of hard tissue samples or resin-embedded prosthetic components down to 100 μm for subsequent observation under an optical microscope
- vacuum pump system for fixing slides to the cutting and grinding devices
- Aristoplan optical microscope (Leica) equipped with polarised light and fluorescence
- Nikon Coolpix 5400 digital camera with C-mount optical adapter and adapter for connection to the Leitz Aristoplan microscope
- Asus VC 60 PC

Access to the laboratory is permitted to:
- authorised students enrolled in degree programmes of the Departments of Biotechnology and Life Sciences (DBSV) and Medicine and Surgery (DMC)
- staff of the biomedical Departments
by appointment with the Head of the Laboratory.
