The University of Insubria is expanding its international dialogue with Africa by initiating a structured exchange with Itafrica and the University of Ebolowa in Cameroon. On Monday 19 January, a meeting was held at the Rector's Office in Varese to define new prospects for academic and international collaboration.
The African delegation was welcomed to the University of Insubria by Vice-Rector Umberto Piarulli, International Relations Delegate Barbara Pozzo, Research Delegate Loredano Pollegioni, Knowledge Enhancement Delegate Mauro Fasano, Teaching Delegate Daniela Dalla Gasperina and Head of Internationalisation Services Luca Gallo.
Itafrica was represented by its president Laura Tronca and Felix Ewane Ntube, a member of the board of directors. The urban city of Ebolowa, twinned with Legnano since 1964, was represented by Jérôme Olivier Onguene Ntonga, head of the cooperation service, and Daniel Eric Oyono Ella, headmaster of an important local high school. Representing the University of Ebolowa were Bilounga, Director of Academic Affairs and Cooperation, and Akam Akam, Director of Administrative and Financial Affairs.
The meeting had two objectives: on the one hand, to evaluate a possible agreement with Itafrica, a non-profit association of professionals and entrepreneurs committed to promoting ethical business, particularly in relations with African countries; on the other hand, to initiate discussions on the contents of a framework agreement with the University of Ebolowa, aimed in particular at the exchange of teachers and students.
The University of Ebolowa, recently established, brings together degree courses ranging from basic sciences to humanities, economics to law, health to agriculture, technology to vocational training, with a strong focus on professionalisation in sectors of strategic importance to the country, on various campuses and in various cities in the southern region of Cameroon. Founded only four years ago, it already has around 16,000 students, including some from other African countries, and is considered a centre of excellence by the current Cameroonian government.
«This meeting represents a significant step for the University of Insubria - emphasises Barbara Pozzo, delegate for international relations -. Dialogue with African universities is a central component of our internationalisation strategy and allows us to build solid partnerships based on training, research and an exchange of skills that is attentive to local contexts».
The University of Insubria's interest in dialogue with African universities is a commitment that is taking shape on several fronts: through individual agreements with African universities, through involvement in the Piano Mattei – the programme promoted by the Italian government to strengthen cooperation with African countries in the fields of education, science and institutions – and, finally, through the organisation of activities in collaboration with associations that have gained solid experience on the African continent.
