Intellectual and industrial property

The University of Insubria recognises the importance of research as a driver of innovation, economic development and social progress.

The University promotes awareness among researchers of a culture of technology transfer and supports them throughout the entire process of protecting and enhancing research outputs, while implementing the most effective strategies for engagement and promotion within the local area.

How to protect research results

A patent is one of the most effective tools for enhancing the value of research results.

Through a patent, the holder obtains the exclusive right to exploit their invention within a specific territory and for a predetermined period of time. Holding a patent makes it possible to prevent others from manufacturing, selling or using the invention without authorisation.

In order to be patentable, an invention must consist of a new and original solution to a technical problem. The subject matter of the invention may be an innovative product, but also a method for producing goods or delivering a service.

There are three patentability requirements:

  • Novelty: an invention is considered new if it has not been made available to the public prior to the filing date of the patent application.
  • Inventive step: an invention is considered to involve an inventive step if, for a person skilled in the relevant field, it does not arise in an obvious way from the state of the art.
  • Industrial applicability: the invention must have an industrial application, meaning that it must be technically feasible and lead to a result with practical effects.

A researcher who believes they have achieved a patentable invention must promptly notify the Knowledge Valorisation Office, following the instructions available on the University intranet page (accessible using institutional email credentials).
