Gathering students' opinions on the delivery and organisation of teaching activities is a central element of the teaching quality assurance system. It allows the University to identify the gap between the expected quality of teaching and that perceived by students, highlighting areas for improvement.
Since the 2011/12 academic year, the evaluation of teaching by students has been carried out using an online questionnaire online questionnaire, based on the format defined by ANVUR, in two versions: ‘attending’ and ‘non-attending’ (see the Attachments section).
The questionnaire is administered to all students, in a time frame defined between 2/3 and the end of the lessons, through the career management system (ESSE3), which students normally access to register for the exam session. The questionnaire is submitted to all students with an initial screening question that leads attending students to complete the usual questionnaire, while non-attending students are directed to a short set of questions to try to understand the reasons that led to their non-attendance of the course.
The system guarantees anonymity to the respondent: it is no longer possible to trace the student who completed the questionnaire from the database. To further guarantee anonymity, starting from the 2017/18 academic year, the Academic Senate has has established that the results of the student opinion survey at the individual course level will be published on the University website only if at least five questionnaires have been completed.
On the initiative of the Quality Assurance Committee, starting from the second semester of the 2016/17 academic year, the University has introduced Opinion Week, a week dedicated to the completion of questionnaires for the evaluation of teaching, during which lecturers invite students in the classroom to use this important tool to express their opinions.
Opinion Week 2025/2026 academic year:
- first semester: 24–28 November 2025
- second semester: 11–15 May 2026
The University Quality Assurance Committee oversees the administration of the questionnaires, promotes the completion of teaching evaluation questionnaires and defines the methods for using and returning the results to students.
Based on the results of the questionnaires:
- Individual lecturers are encouraged to reflect on their teaching activities and engage in dialogue with students.
- The Study Programme identifies and implements measures to improve teaching activities. As part of the opinion week, it identifies a time to provide students with feedback on the results of the previous semester's questionnaires and any activities that may have resulted from them.
- The Joint Teacher-Student Committee of the teaching structure to which it belongs evaluates the entire process (administration of questionnaires, evaluation of results, improvement activities and feedback to students) for each Study Programme and reports on it in its Annual Report, also providing suggestions for improvement.
- The Evaluation Unit prepares an annual report for ANVUR on the evaluation of teaching carried out by the University and publishes it on the website.
Where do I go to fill out the questionnaire?
Go to ESSE3 and, in the menu on the left, select LOGIN and log in using your University user ID and password .
This step ensures that only the opinions of students who are enrolled in the course during the academic year in question are collected for the evaluation.
You must complete and confirm the questionnaire in a single session (the system does not allow you to save a draft, log out and log back in later to the partially completed questionnaire).
Upon confirmation, the answers are stored without any link to the credentials/student number/identification of the user who provided them.
For each course for which online teaching evaluation is active, the system stores the completed questionnaires without author (in accordance with Law 370/99, Article 1, paragraph 2) and therefore not traceable to any individual.
Still in the left-hand menu at the bottom, select QUESTIONNAIRES to evaluate teaching activities: a list of courses and teaching activities to be evaluated will appear.
The last column (called Q.Val.) contains the status of the completion of the teaching evaluation questionnaire for each exam:
green = already completed
yellow = partially completed
red = not completed
By clicking on the red or yellow icon icon, you will be taken to the ‘Evaluation questionnaire selection’ page, where all the completable questionnaires for the course are listed in a table, i.e. one questionnaire per module or lecturer.
At this point, clicking on the red icon will take you to the summary page with the completed or fillable questionnaires for each lecturer or module. To access the questionnaire, click on the icon with a sheet of paper and pen on the right-hand side of the screen, and then you can express your evaluations regarding attendance or reasons for non-attendance.
The questionnaire for attending students is divided into four sections: Teaching; Lecturer; Interest and Suggestions.
The questionnaire for non-attending students (or those with less than 50% attendance) includes information about the individual course (including reasons for non-attendance) and information about the lecturer's availability during office hours.
Once you have completed the questionnaire, simply confirm the data. Access to the completion of the questionnaires is possible only after the completion of the study plan, for courses that require it.
Please note: the evaluation questionnaires refer to the courses taught in the current academic year relating to each student's educational path. For courses taught in previous academic years, for which the student only has to take the exam, the questionnaire icon will not be visible, as it is no longer possible to complete it.
