School for Training in Experiments with Lasers and Laser Applications ( STELLA) School of Sciences in Como
STELLA aims at establishing a European center of excellence for higher education, i.e. a site where top-level technical know-how in laser physics and nonlinear optics is made readily accessible to the entire European young-scientist community and researchers who intend to collaborate in a community of full and long-term dissemination of knowledge and expertise can find an appropriate center-of-mass.
STELLA is the first ever summer program for high-level training in experimental activity, where world-class researchers train students directly on sophisticated research equipment. A spectacular science-and-art exhibition, highlighting the unique and unexpected influence that scientific knowledge has on our everyday “artistic” perception of nature, has great impact on the quality of training in elementary and secondary schools and in public society. The project proposes a highly innovative approach to education, which de-emphasizes competition among the laboratories in favor of true enhancement of knowledge levels.
With the aim of supporting and preserving the high-level scientific and technical expertise now available in the former Soviet Union, and of exploiting the long standing Como-Vilnius collaboration, the 2006-2009 STELLA editions will be hold in Vilnius, under the support of a European Marie Curie Chair program coordinated by Professor Paolo Di Trapani from the University of Insubria.
