3RD INTERNATIONAL COURSE ON ENDOCRINE SURGERY
Intraoperative monitoring of laryngeal nerves in thyroid surgery

The course will be held on July 1st 2011, at the Palace Grand Hotel Varese (www.palacevarese.it) in Varese, Italy.

The Course is intended to be a one-day comprehensive review and update of surgery of the thyroid gland with emphasis on the intraoperative monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). The Course is offered by the International Insubria Summer School (IISS) and the Department of Surgical Sciences of the University of Insubria (Varese-Como, Italy). Course highlights are: surgical landmarks of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), mechanism of RLN injury, risk factors for RLN  injury, intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM), indications for using IONM, intraoperative evidence of RLN  injury, standardization of IONM technique, stage thyroidectomy, limitations of IONM, IONM during video-assisted thyroidectomy, cost analysis, safety of new haemostatic and dissecting devices close to the nerves, malpractice in thyroid surgery. Course Presidents are dr. Feng-Yu Chiang, MD from the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital in Taiwan, prof. Henning Dralle, MD, FACS, FRCS from the University Hospital Halle, Germany, prof. Gregory Randolph, MD, FACS from Harvard Medical School, USA and prof. Gianlorenzo Dionigi, MD, FACS from the University of Insubria, Italy.

Accreditation. The course has obtained the acknowledgement of 6 European CME credits by the EACCME (European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education) and 3,5 Italian ECM credits by the Italian Ministry of Public Health.

The official language is English. Simultaneous translation will be provided.

All the scientific sessions will be held at the Palace Grand Hotel Varese (www.palacevarese.it) in Varese, Italy. The nearest airport is Malpensa Airport (Mxp), about 20 minutes from Varese by car.
