Residency Programs

Thoracic Surgery
School of Medicine

Established in 1997, the Residency Program in Thoracic Surgery offers a four year program to one resident per year. It includes lessons, seminars, clinical case discussions, clinical experience in the wards and in the surgical rooms at the Department of Surgery in the Ospedale di Circolo in Varese.

The program is designed to train thoracic surgeons with clinical skills in the following fields:

• management of the surgical patient
• mini-invasive thoracic surgery (video-assisted thoracoscopy and mediastinoscopy)
• open chest thoracic surgery
• early diagnosis and surgical treatment of lung cancer, primary and metastatic
• surgery for: mediastinal tumours; malignant pleural mesothelioma, chest wall tumors, pleura empyema, pneumothorax
• minimally invasive biopsies for disease of the pleura, lung, mediastinum, chest wall

At the end of each academic year the residents are evaluated by the Council of the Program. Upon completion of five year program, the residents present a thesis and qualify as a thoracic surgeon.
