Entry into the Physics PhD Program requires a Graduate or Masters level background in physics or a related field. The application call appears in late July, with a deadline of mid-September. Admission is based on experience and qualifications, and on an interview held in late October. A minimum four places are available annually, with at least two full grants. Year-to-year more places and grants may be offered for specific government or research-agency funded projects.
The three-year PhD program aims to train highly qualified and independent researchers, with the specific goal of acquiring the theoretical and/or experimental instruments pertaining to the lines of research active in the Department. The areas present are numerous, covering modern experimental e theoretical physics, from quantum optics and laser physics to high-energy particles and cosmology.
Students take part in a variety of additional activities aimed at enhancing personal and professional skills. They attend lectures and seminars given by Italian and foreign researchers visiting the Department and may assist in teaching laboratories or tutorials.
Many international collaborations are present; students may thus spend up to a
year in universities and research institutions outside Italy. The grant is
automatically increased by 50% for the duration of a stay abroad.
