This program offers a four year EU-acknowledged course in Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, designed for students with graduate degrees in Medicine and Surgery (Clinical Pharmacology, Chemotherapy), Pharmacy, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology, Biological Sciences, Veterinary Medicine (Chemotherapy, Applied Pharmacology, Toxicology).
The program consists of formal lectures, seminars, practical laboratory and clinical work, and individualized training stages in academic, hospital and industrial institutions. Topics included in the program are: pharmacodynamics, basic and clinical pharmacokinetics (including TDM), drug discovery and development, in vitro/in vivo models and techniques for pharmacotoxicological evaluations, planning and evaluation of clinical trials of drug therapeutics, basic and clinical pharmacogenetics, ADR monitoring, reporting and evaluation, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics, drug regulation. Specific training in clinical settings is provided for curricula in Clinical Pharmacology and in Chemotherapy.
Admission to each successive year of the program is dependent upon the results of an examination, and the degree is granted after the writing and oral defense of an original thesis/dissertation. Students with a graduate degree in Medicine and Surgery are granted a stipend from the Ministry of Health. Further support to students may also eventually come from public or private institutions on the basis of ad hoc agreements with the University.
Professional opportunities for specialists in Pharmacology include: clinical pharmacology and TDM services in hospitals and other public/private health services, pharmacology consultants in oncology wards and services, clinical services for drug/alcohol dependence and in poison control centers, pharmaceutical industries, contract research organizations, and in other public/private institutions involved in R&D in the field of pharmacology.
