Established in 2004, the Residency Program in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine at the University of Insubria is a four year program that grants the title of Specialist in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine.
The program is designed to train medical doctors in the various fields of infectious diseases. The resident must complete 200 hours/year of formal classwork and 38 hours/week of clinical practice in the Infectious Diseases ward at the University Hospital in Varese. The residents, in addition to learning the main aspects of the organization of the healthcare system, have the opportunity to gain experience with epidemiological and statistical methods through collaborative work on to design, execution and analysis of epidemiological studies and randomized clinical trials.
Additionally, through their work in a clinical infectious diseases ward, the program presents residents with a unique opportunity to gain experience with all the aspects related to nosocomial infections, including international classification of infections, diagnostic methods and antimicrobial treatments. Emphasis is also given to the occupational risks of working with potentially infectious bodily fluids and the prevention and management protocols.
