Established in 1990, the aim of the school is to complete the training of fully registered medical doctors in the various fields of general and oncological surgery. At the end of the 6 year program, the board of the school grants the degree of Specialized Surgeon, which is fully recognized in the EU.
The school curriculum requires a mandatory activity of more then 800 hours/year divided into 400 hours for formal teaching and the remaining 400 to be spent in the clinical surgical ward at the main Institute (Chirurgia Generale I, Azienda Ospedaliero, Universitari; Ospedale di Circolo, Varese) or in one of the authorized Departments of Surgery, located in the Insubria Area.
Requirements for the surgical trainees:
At least 50 major surgical procedures of whom at least 10% as first surgeon.
At least 120 medium surgical procedures of whom at least 20% as first surgeon.
At least 250 minor surgical procedures of whom at least 40% as first surgeon.
(10% of the above procedures should be performed on emergency settings)
At least 200 hours at the Department of Emergency/Accident
The trainee should be personally responsible for the diagnostic and therapeutic path of not less then 50 patients in the critical area, 150 patients in Emergency settings and at least 600 patients in elective conditions.
