Started in academic year 2005-2006, the Ph.D. program in Computer Science is offered by the Department of Computer Science and Communication at the University of Insubia, Varese, with the collaboration of the Department of Sciences of Culture, Politics and Information at Como.
The three year program trains and develops doctorate level professionals with the ability to thrive in the competitive academic job market and to pursue careers in advanced research centers. Candidate students must have a prior graduate degree and are selected through a formal admissions process.
With dedicated mentoring from the department faculty, accepted Ph.D. students pursue a program of independent research and additional (limited) course work, culminating in production of a Ph.D. thesis. The students actively participate in national and international meetings as a part of their education and are required to spend a period of time studying abroad. Upon completion, the student defends the thesis before a committee of mostly external faculty.
Main areas of the Ph.D. Program are:
Theory of Computation, Software (software engineering, programming languages, Data Bases, Artificial Intelligence (knowledge representation and automatic reasoning, machine learning, computer graphics, image processing, natural language processing), Multimedia Systems, Distributed Systems, Applications (medical informatics, informatics for cultural heritage, Internet applications). In addition, interdisciplinary studies are emphasized.
