The Residency Program in Cardiac Surgery was established at the University of Insubria, Varese in 1997.
This five-year accredited residency program certifies physicians to work as cardiac surgeons. The residents' training in this program includes pre-operative, operative and post-operative care of adult cardiac surgical patients.
The educational mission of the Cardiac Surgery Residency Program is to train surgeons to work as qualified practitioners of cardiac surgery at the highest level of performance expected of a certified specialist.
Surgical experience is based on academic guidance in the operating rooms and clinical and ambulatory area, and an optimum number of diverse adult cardiac operative experiences under supervision. Teaching conferences, lessons and research facilities are also considered an integral part of the formation.
With the approval of the Board, students may also choose to spend one year in an authorized foreign institution of cardiac surgery.
At the end of the five year course, trainees earn the degree of cardiac surgeon. To be admitted to the final examination, the trainees must have attended general surgery and emergency units, lessons and training, passed annual examinations, been involved in at least three controlled clinical trials and demonstrate to have performed:
diagnostic procedures at least in 100 cases
cardiac surgery operations in 250 cases (20% as first surgeon)
general and specialistic surgery in 200 cases (20% as first surgeon)
